I know what you're thinking right now. Aren't cranberries grown in bogs in the New England region of the US? How can you call that a cranberry? Cranberries don't grow on a bush. Ah, but this is where you're wrong. The American Cranberry Bush does. With beautiful white flowers in spring and cranberry colored berries in the summer and winter the American Cranberry Bush is a source of food for birds everywhere.

Grown as both a prime sample of the species and a nice bordering hedge in the vegetable gardens, the Chicago Botanical Garden boasts several prime examples of this lovely bush. The berries, as you see in this photo, start out as a lovely shade of yellow and mature into the beautiful cranberry red. These particular berries are in the process of maturing from yellow to red and that transition is quite visible in this small cluster of berries. The bright cranberry red and yellow berries stand out against the deep green leaves in the bush creating the perfect canvas for the berries to rest upon.
